Where might the Hine / Smith families have lived?

 

Shottery, Stratford Upon Avon: I visited here in 2007 and have logged the following information. On the next pages are some pictures and maps of possible residences. Shottery was just called 'Shottery Village' and cottages were not named or numbered - and on each census day the enumerator did a different walk so much is guess work but gives a feel for the area. The Bell Inn is in the centre with a ring of houses round it and a number of road off this (so the person could have walked in any direction!).

1871 Schedule:

  • 1 = Manor House
  • 2 – Shottery Cottage
  • 3 = William and Sylvia Hine
  • 21 – William and Ann Smith
  • 48 = Hathaway cottage.
  • 84 = Thomas and Hannah Hine
  • 94 = Bell Inn – last place on rota.

Schedule 1881 – possibly starts from the pub as the blacksmith was nextdoor.

  • 1 = Cranmer Family – Blacksmith
  • 5 = Cranmere Blacksmith
  • 6 = Cranmere
  • 9 = William +Ann Smith+ Minnie
  • 10 = Thomah and Hannah Hine, Amos and Jane Hine .
  • 16 = William and Sylvie and daughter Emma Hine .
  • 18 = Manor House
  • 25 = George wife Mary and daughter Annie Hine
  • 31 = onwards starts 'The cottages' (Possible the row next to Ann Hathaway's)
  • 35 = is Shottery Hall - possibly now called Shottery Lodge near the visitors carpark.
  • 61 – Ann Hathaway Cottage

  • 7 – Emily Hine, widower with Auther and Harry
  • 12 = George Hine and Mary, Annie, William, Emily,Fred and Marie.
  • 24 = Pub Bell Inn
  • 25 = William Cranmer – Blacksmith
  • 29 = William and Sylvia
  • 31 = William Smith and Ann
